Description
What is it
Chitharathai (Alpinia officinarum), also known as kulinjan or lesser galangal, is a cousin of ginger. Its slim, reddish-brown rhizome has a warm, peppery, gingery aroma that fills the room the moment it’s ground.
Siddha tradition values chitharathai for throat and digestive wellness. In Tamil homes a small piece is chewed slowly, or simmered into a warm kashayam with honey. Our powder brings that warmth to you, finely ground and ready to use.
What Makes This Different
- Rhizome only. Made from the aromatic rhizome, the part used in Siddha practice.
- Warmth you can smell. Carefully dried and ground to keep its spicy, gingery fragrance.
- Single ingredient. 100% Chitharathai rhizome, with no fillers, flavouring or blending agents.
What It Does
- A Siddha herb for throat and digestive wellness. Traditionally valued for both.
- Honey’s old companion. A pinch of chitharathai mixed with honey is a time-honoured Tamil habit.
- A warm kitchen spice. Its gingery, peppery bite suits kashayam, herbal teas and spice blends.
- A spice that crossed continents. Galangal travelled the medieval spice routes to Europe, where the 12th-century German abbess Hildegard of Bingen praised it as one of her most valued spices.
A Root That Travelled the Spice Routes
Long before it reached European apothecaries, chitharathai was already at home in Tamil kitchens. Warm, peppery and fragrant, FounditGood Chitharathai Powder brings that old spice-route treasure back to your shelf.
