What is it

Drive through the dry hills of Tamil Nadu after the rains and you’ll see it on every roadside: low shrubs lit up with clusters of golden flowers. This is avaram (Senna auriculata), and its flower, avarampoo, has been part of South Indian daily life for generations.

Ayurveda knows it as Avartaki, with poetic Sanskrit names such as Pitapuspa, “the yellow-flowered one”; Hindi speakers call it Tarwar, Telugu speakers Tangedu. In the Siddha tradition, the avarai flower holds a respected place in the Gunapadam, the classical Siddha materia medica, where it is classed as a cooling herb. Twice a year, in the early and late monsoon, the shrub bursts into bloom, and that gold is what we gather, dry and grind.

How to Use It

Everyday glass: Stir ¼ to ½ teaspoon into a glass of warm water or buttermilk once a day.

Avarampoo tea: Simmer 1 teaspoon in 1½ cups of water for 5 minutes, strain and sip warm. A little palm jaggery or honey is a traditional touch.

In the kitchen: Add a teaspoon to dal, kootu or rasam towards the end of cooking.

Storage: Keep in an airtight container, away from heat, light and moisture. Use a dry spoon.
