Anyone who grew up in Tamil Nadu remembers it: that distinctive sweet-earthy fragrance, the pale amber colour, the instantly recognisable taste of Hemidesmus indicus root steeped in water with a little sugar and a squeeze of lime. Street vendors sold it in summer. Grandmothers kept the dried root in the kitchen. The body in the South Indian heat knew exactly what it needed, and Nannari was the answer.
Nannari is the Tamil name for Hemidesmus indicus — a slender climbing shrub whose woody root has been one of India’s most respected herbal medicines for over two thousand years. In Sanskrit it is Anantamula — “the root without end” — a name that acknowledges both its creeping, vine-like growth and its seemingly inexhaustible list of traditional uses. In Hindi it is Anantmul. In Malayalam, Naruninti. In Ayurvedic classical texts, it is Sariva — and Charaka placed it in the agraya prakarana, the category of herbs considered “best in their class,” specifically for their role in digestive health and blood purification.
